Dyson V8 Series Battery Replacement

The V8 platform runs at 21.6 V with a screw-retained pack identified by 214730-01, 164527-01, 229602-01, 215866 or 967834-02. Our 4.0 Ah replacement is AU $52.79 (list AU $70.99) with Panasonic A grade 18650 cells, and the SV10 machine code is the same pack. Dyson Australia sells one shared part number for V7 and V8 machines, which is precisely how owners end up ordering the wrong aftermarket battery — so this page starts with the codes, not the marketing name.

Verdict

Which machines sit on the V8 battery platform

From the fit list on our V8 product page and the SV10 listing, both of which publish the same 4.0 Ah pack.

Fits these models

  • V8, V8 Absolute, V8 Animal, V8 Animal Exclusive, V8 Fluffy
  • SV10, SV10 Absolute, SV10 Animal, SV10 Fluffy
  • Part and replacement codes: 214730-01, 164527-01, 229602-01, 215866, 967834-02, SV10
  • Machines whose old pack reads 21.6 V and 4.0 Ah in the V8 housing

Not for these

  • V7 and SV11 — a separate SKU with its own codes (968670-02 / 225403), see the V7 platform page
  • V6 and DC58–DC74 — slide-in packs on a different shell
  • V10 / SV12 — that platform is 25.2 V
  • DC31–DC45 handhelds — 22.2 V legacy, Type A or Type B
  • V11, V11 Outsize, V12, V15 Detect, Gen5 — outside our current range

Our V8 product page carries one line we do not repeat here: it describes the pack as "fully compatible with your Dyson V8 & V6 Series". A V6 machine takes a slide-in pack, not this shell, so we ship against the part codes above and not that sentence — [CONFIRM whether the V8 listing's V6 compatibility wording is current]. If your battery label shows a V6 code (965874-02, 61034-01), order on the V6 page instead.

The confusing part

One Dyson part for V7 and V8, two different packs from us

Dyson Australia lists a single replacement battery, part 972237-01 at AU $150.00, as "compatible with below skus only": V7 419671-01, 419672-01 and 419667-01, plus V8 394437-01, 394441-01, 400392-01, 400393-01 and 419680-01. So a genuine swap is interchangeable between those two families. Our aftermarket packs are not: the V7 pack is keyed to 968670-02 / 225403 housings and the V8 pack to 214730-01 / 164527-01 housings, at different prices.

How to avoid buying the wrong one

  1. Read the code on the pack you are replacing

Not the model name on the handle, and not the Dyson part number you found in a search result. The sticker on the old battery carries the code that decides the shell.

Collage of photographs showing a replacement lithium battery being unboxed, inserted into a cordless Dyson handle and locked in place.
  2. Check the SV code on the machine label

SV10 belongs to the V8 family, SV11 belongs to the V7 family. That single letter-and-number pair separates the two SKUs when the marketing name is unclear.

Three photographs showing where the battery retaining screw sits on a Dyson SV03 handle and the screw being loosened.
  3. Compare the price of the listing you are actually ordering

V8 and SV10 packs are AU $52.79; V7 and SV11 packs are AU $50.79. A two-dollar difference is cheap insurance against a pack that will not seat. If the two readings conflict for your machine, email info@aussiebatt.com with the code and a photo.

Symptoms

Typical faults on the V8 platform

The V8's most common complaint is a run time that has quietly halved. Before you buy, run the two free checks: a washed and fully dry pre-filter, and a clear cyclone and airway.

Cuts out mid-clean, hot near the motor

Blocked airflow makes the machine shut down to protect the motor, and it feels identical to a failing cell. Dyson V8 battery usage tips covers the mode and filter duty that causes most of these calls.

Only runs on the lowest mode

A pack that fails under MAX load but survives on standard is worn, not broken — and it will get worse. Check it against the replacement signs list before ordering.

No charge light at the dock

Plug into a working outlet and look at the lights on the dock or adapter first. If those are dead, the 21.6 V charger is at fault, not the pack.

The decision on this platform is a code check, not a model check. If your old pack reads 214730-01, 164527-01, 229602-01, 215866 or 967834-02 at 21.6 V — or the machine label says SV10 — the V8 4.0 Ah pack at AU $52.79 is the one. If it reads 968670-02 or 225403 you are a V7 owner, and Dyson's shared part number is the only reason the two ever get mixed up.
