Dyson DC31 Replacement Battery — 22.2 V, Type A or Type B

The DC31 is one of Dyson's older 22.2 V handhelds, and on this platform the model number alone is not enough to order: our DC31 listing sells the same shell in two fittings. Type A "Extended Life" runs from AU $65.99 to AU $39.79, and Type B "Long Life" from AU $70.99 to AU $43.79. Both are 22.2 V Li-ion, both replace the 17083 and 917083 code families, and both ship free from Granville, Sydney with a full 1 year warranty.

Look at how your old pack is held in: a press latch means Type A, a screw means Type B.

Charger needed?
No, if your 22.2 V charger works — a 21.6 V charger will not do

The type letter is the decision, the price follows it. On this platform people shop by price and then discover the pack will not latch or will not line up with the screw holes. Check the retaining style on your own machine first: press latch means Type A, screw retention means Type B. The two are not interchangeable and neither is a substitute for the other.

Two DC31-family readings are live on our site. This DC31 listing publishes 22.2 V, 2.0 Ah in Type A at AU $39.79 and Type B at AU $43.79, while the separate DC31 Animal product page publishes 22.2 V, 3000 mAh, 358 g, Reg AU $73.04 → Sale AU $66.40. Different capacity and different money for machines in the same family, so we publish both rather than pick one: [CONFIRM which DC31 listing applies to your machine].

Dyson Australia publishes no list price for a DC31 battery, so we have not printed a saving figure against Dyson on this page. The genuine 22.2 V part it does price — Type B 967861-04 at AU $150.00 — covers DC34, DC35, DC43H, DC44 and DC45: [CONFIRM Dyson Australia's current genuine DC31 pack price and part number].

We only print a Dyson comparison where Dyson publishes a price. For the DC31 it does not, so this table shows the genuine 22.2 V part it does list and says plainly which machines that part covers.

The other part DC31 owners really need: the 22.2 V charger

On the legacy handhelds the charger fails about as often as the pack, and it is a different charger from the 21.6 V one used by V6, V7 and V8 machines. Our shop lists a "Charger for 22.2V Dyson DC31 DC34 DC35 DC44 Animal", and if yours is missing, a new battery will simply sit uncharged. See the Dyson battery chargers page, and never substitute a charger of another voltage to save buying one.

What you get

Four things this pack puts back into a DC31

A DC31 that must be kept on the charger to run at all is a handheld that has stopped being useful. These are the four points that matter on a machine of this age.

22.2 V, 2.0 Ah

22.2 V × 2.0 Ah = 44.4 Wh — labelled as arithmetic. Our DC31 Animal page publishes a 3000 mAh reading, which is 66.6 Wh on the same voltage.

Type A or Type B

Two retainings on one shell family: Extended Life (Type A) at AU $39.79 and Long Life (Type B) at AU $43.79, both matched to the 17083 / 917083 codes.

Fits the physical bay

Case dimensions of 120 × 75 × 66.7 mm and 378 g on the 2.0 Ah pack, so the shell sits in the bay as designed instead of being forced into it.

Fitting

Three steps, and one photo before you start

Photograph the label on the old pack first. It records the code, the voltage and the type, which is everything a warranty claim or a returns request needs.

  1. 1
Three photographs showing where a battery retaining screw sits on a cordless vacuum handle whose label reads SV03, and how that screw is loosened with a driver.

    Free the old pack

Unplug the charger. If yours is Type B, undo the retaining screw — our SV03 photo sequence shows the same retained-screw principle. If it is Type A, press the latch instead.

  2. 2
Collage showing an exhausted handheld vacuum battery lifted away and a new replacement lithium pack lined up with the same bay and contacts.

    Fit the replacement

Line the new pack up to the same contacts and locating points and slide it home. If it needs force, stop: it is the wrong type.

  3. 3
Three photographs showing a replacement battery being aligned to the handle, pushed into position and locked in place on a cordless vacuum.

Refit, then charge on the 22.2 V charger

Refit your own screw snugly without forcing plastic threads, then charge on the 22.2 V charger before the first run.

Stop if the old pack shows any of this

Swelling, discolouration, a burnt smell, a pack that has been soaked or dropped hard, or cells rattling inside the case. Do not charge it, never puncture it, and take it to an Australian household-battery recycler — most councils and large retailers run drop-off points.

Diagnosis

Why DC31 and other 22.2 V handheld packs fail

Old packs, small capacity, and a fault that is often the charger

A 44.4 Wh pack on a handheld reaches its cycle limit sooner than a stick vacuum's battery, simply because it is smaller and because owners run these machines in short bursts all day rather than one planned clean. Heat and flat storage do the rest: a DC31 left in a hot car or a shed over summer, or left flat for months, may refuse to take a charge at all. Before you buy a pack on a machine that will not charge, rule the charger out — plug into a known working outlet, check the indicator on the adapter, and read the DC35 won't-charge diagnosis order, which is written for this same 22.2 V family. Then check the signs it is time to replace the battery. For the habits that keep a legacy pack alive, the DC31 maintenance tips guide covers storage state of charge, cool dry storage, running a cycle every 2–3 weeks and calibrating the gauge with a full charge, full discharge and full charge.

Questions

Dyson DC31 battery questions, answered

How do I know whether my DC31 needs Type A or Type B?

Look at how the old pack is held in. If a press latch or release button frees it with no tools, you have the click-in style (Type A, "Extended Life" at AU $39.79 on our DC31 listing). If you have to undo a screw before the pack slides out, you have the screw-retained style (Type B, "Long Life" at AU $43.79). Dyson itself warns that DC35, DC44 and DC45 were sold with either fitting, so the same test applies across the family. Read the DC35 Type A versus Type B page for the full walkthrough and click-in versus screw-in for the pictures.

Which charger does a DC31 take, and can I use a V6 or V8 charger?

No. The DC31 is a 22.2 V platform and takes the charger we list as "Charger for 22.2V Dyson DC31 DC34 DC35 DC44 Animal". The 21.6 V chargers used by DC58–DC62, V6, V7 and V8 are a different voltage and are not interchangeable, and neither is the 25.2 V V10 charger. If your charger is lost or faulty, see the charger page — a new pack cannot be tested without one.

The DC31 pack gets hot while charging or running. Is that normal?

Mild warmth is normal on any lithium pack. A case that is too hot to hold, one that is swelling, discoloured or smells burnt, or a charge that never completes, is not — unplug it and stop using it. On machines this age the charger and the charging contacts cause a fair share of heat and no-charge symptoms, which is why our won't-charge guide tells you to check them before blaming cells.

How long will a new DC31 battery run per charge?

We publish no runtime minutes on aussiebatt.com for any battery, so we will not invent one here. The honest figure is stored energy: 22.2 V × 2.0 Ah = 44.4 Wh on the DC31 listing's 2.0 Ah pack, or 66.6 Wh on the 3000 mAh reading our DC31 Animal page publishes. Minutes are that energy divided by the machine's draw, which depends on the mode in use, the attachment and the condition of the filters — and a blocked handheld inlet shortens run time dramatically. Dyson's own model pages are the right source for minute figures.

My DC31 is in a family with other Dysons still under warranty — does fitting this void anything?

Fitting a third-party battery will normally void Dyson's cover on the machine it is fitted to, so if that DC31 is still inside Dyson's period, claim through Dyson first. Our own limitation is published in full: our warranty does not extend to any products that are physically damaged or that are not under normal operating conditions as a result of misuse or improper installation on the buyer/user's part. The long answer is in does replacing a Dyson battery void my warranty.

Delivery and warranty claim route — how does it work?

Orders are processed within 24 hours at Granville, Sydney, shipping is free via Australia Post, and most parcels arrive in 3–7 working days fully tracked with the number emailed. For a claim, email info@aussiebatt.com with the order number, the model code, the photo of the old label and the fault; support runs Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm. Ordered the wrong type? The 30 day money back window covers it — see our return policy.
