Which Dyson Models Use the Same Battery? The Complete V6–V15 Compatibility Guide
Editor’s note (Experience & Expertise): This guide was written and fact-checked by the AussieBatt battery engineers in Sydney, who fit, test and dispatch replacement Dyson packs every working day. Every model number, voltage and SV code below has been cross-checked against Dyson’s own published specifications and against the physical battery housings we stock, so you can match your vacuum before you spend a cent.
Australia and United States customers are served from the same warehouse; warranty terms, shipping and returns are set out on our Payment & Shipping and Return Policy pages.
Short answer: it depends entirely on the generation
If you own more than one Dyson cordless vacuum, you have probably wondered whether you can swap batteries between them. The short answer is: it depends on the generation. Dyson has changed its battery connector design several times over the years, which means some models share batteries while others do not. In this guide, we break down exactly which Dyson models use the same battery, organised by battery family, so you buy the right replacement the first time.
- V6 family (21.6V, slide-in): one pack fits the V6, DC58, DC59, DC61, DC62, DC72 and DC74.
- V7 and V8 (21.6V, snap-on): each generation is standalone — a V7 pack will never fit a V8.
- V10 family (in-handle cylinder): the Absolute, Animal, Motorhead and Total Clean all share one pack.
- V11 click-in (25.2V): shared with the V15 Detect, so those two can swap freely.
- V11 screw-in (early V11): standalone, and not compatible with the V15.
- V12 Detect Slim: a smaller click-in pack that fits neither the V11 nor the V15.
Understanding which family your vacuum belongs to will save you money and frustration. Let us walk through each one.
Is your Dyson V10 vacuum losing suction or not lasting as long on a single charge? You’re not alone — many owners want to get the most out of their battery. The Dyson V10 is known for powerful performance, but optimising runtime requires the right technique. Whether you are in Australia (AU) or the USA, this guide will help you extend your Dyson battery life, improve efficiency, and know exactly when it is time for a replacement. If you already know your model, jump straight to the full compatibility chart; if you are still unsure, start with how to identify your battery.
🔋 Why Dyson Changes Battery Designs Between Generations
Dyson redesigns its battery packs for practical engineering reasons. Each new vacuum generation typically brings a more powerful motor, updated electronics, or a different form factor. These changes often require a new battery shape, voltage, or connector style to match. The result is that batteries from one generation rarely fit another, even though the vacuums may look almost identical on the outside.
That is the single biggest source of wasted money in the Dyson aftermarket: buying “the wrong battery” because two models looked the same in a photograph. Here is a quick summary of the main battery families before we go into detail:
- V6 family — shared across V6, DC58, DC59, DC61, DC62, DC72, DC74
- V7 — unique battery design (not shared)
- V8 — unique battery design (not shared)
- V10 family — shared across all V10 models
- V11 click-in family — shared with the V15, and some V11 models
- V11 screw-in — standalone design used on early V11 units
Understanding which family your vacuum belongs to will save you money and frustration. Let us walk through each one.
🏆 V6 Battery Family: The Widest Compatibility
The V6 generation has the broadest cross-compatibility of any Dyson battery family. A single 21.6V battery pack fits all of the following models:
Dyson V6 battery family — models and SV numbers covered by one 21.6V pack
| Model name | SV model number |
|---|---|
| Dyson V6 replacement batteries | SV03, SV04, SV05, SV06 |
| Dyson V6 Absolute | SV05 |
| Dyson V6 Animal | SV04 |
| Dyson V6 Fluffy | SV03 |
| Dyson V6 Motorhead | SV04 |
| Dyson V6 Slim | SV03 |
| Dyson DC58 | SV03 |
| Dyson DC59 | SV03 |
| Dyson DC61 | SV03 |
| Dyson DC62 | SV03 |
| Dyson DC72 | SV03 |
| Dyson DC74 | SV03 |
All of these vacuums use the same slide-in battery with a two-screw mounting system. If you own a DC59 and a V6 Animal, one replacement battery works for both.
Older handheld models such as the DC12, DC16, DC31 and DC35 sit outside the V6 family and use different, lower-voltage packs — check the compatibility chart before ordering for those.
One extra code to know: Dyson’s own support documentation also lists SV09 within the V6 family alongside SV03, SV04 and SV05, and it appears on some later V6 handhelds. We stock a dedicated Dyson SV09 battery for those units — if your vacuum carries an SV09 label, order that rather than a standard SV03 pack.
Best-value V6-family pick
Because the V6 platform spans so many models, an SV03/SV04 pack is the single most universally compatible Dyson replacement we sell. It is the safest choice if you are buying a replacement for someone else and are not yet sure of the model.
🔒 V7 and V8: Each Stands Alone
This is where things get less convenient. The Dyson V7 and V8 each use a unique battery design that is not interchangeable with any other generation, including each other.
Dyson V7 Battery Details
Dyson V7 models and their shared SV model number
| Model name | SV model number |
|---|---|
| Dyson V7 Absolute | SV11 |
| Dyson V7 Animal | SV11 |
| Dyson V7 Motorhead | SV11 |
| Dyson V7 Fluffy | SV11 |
| Dyson V7 Trigger | SV11 |
The V7 uses a 21.6V battery with a connector shape that differs from both the V6 and the V8. All V7 sub-models (Absolute, Animal, Motorhead, Fluffy, Trigger) share the same battery, but that battery will not fit any other Dyson generation.
Dyson V8 Battery Details
Dyson V8 models and their shared SV model number
| Model name | SV model number |
|---|---|
| Dyson V8 Absolute | SV10 |
| Dyson V8 Animal | SV10 |
| Dyson V8 Motorhead | SV10 |
| Dyson V8 Fluffy | SV10 |
Similarly, the V8 uses a 21.6V battery with yet another unique connector. All V8 sub-models are compatible with each other, but you cannot use a V7 battery in a V8 or vice versa. The physical dimensions and latch mechanisms are different enough to prevent cross-fitting — and forcing a pack into the wrong handle can bend the gold-plated contact pins and damage the vacuum.
For run-time and care guidance on these two models specifically, see our Dyson V8 battery product page and the Dyson V7 battery product page.
🔋 V10 Battery Family: A New In-Line Design
With the V10, Dyson moved to an in-line (straight) body design instead of the pistol-grip layout used in the V6 through V8. This new form factor required a completely different battery shape — a cylindrical pack that sits inside the handle.
Dyson V10 models and their shared SV model number
| Model name | SV model number |
|---|---|
| Dyson V10 Absolute | SV12 |
| Dyson V10 Animal | SV12 |
| Dyson V10 Motorhead | SV12 |
| Dyson V10 Total Clean | SV12 |
All V10 sub-models (Absolute, Animal, Motorhead, Total Clean) use the same battery pack. The V10 battery is not compatible with the V11 or any earlier generation — it is a standalone family, even though the V11 also uses an in-line body.
On voltage, the V10 pack is a 21.6V nominal pack that charges to 25.2V, and the genuine article is rated around 2600mAh. A full charge delivers up to roughly 60 minutes of runtime depending on the mode you use. If runtime is already dropping, work through our Dyson V10 battery runtime optimisation guide before you spend money on a new pack — a blocked filter or a worn brush bar can cut runtime dramatically on a perfectly good battery.
🔄 V11 Click-In Family: Shared with the V15
This is where cross-generation compatibility gets interesting again. Dyson produced two different V11 battery types, and the one you have depends on when and where your V11 was manufactured.
Click-In Battery (Newer V11, V12, V15)
The click-in style battery snaps into the vacuum body without any screws. This design debuted on later V11 production runs and carried forward into the V15 Detect. If your V11 has a battery that clicks in and out with a release button, it uses the same battery as the V15.
Click-in battery models: the V11 click-in pack and the V15 Detect share one battery
| Model name | SV model number | Battery type |
|---|---|---|
| Dyson V11 (newer production) | SV14, SV15 | Click-in |
| Dyson V11 Outsize | SV16 | Click-in (larger capacity) |
| Dyson V15 Detect | SV22, SV47 | Click-in |
This is great news for households with both a V11 (click-in version) and a V15 Detect. You can swap batteries between these vacuums, which is useful when one battery is charging and you need to keep cleaning.
Screw-In Battery (Early V11)
The original V11 units shipped with a screw-in battery that attaches with a single Torx screw. This design is not compatible with the click-in models or any other Dyson generation.
Early V11 screw-in battery models, fitted with a Torx screw
| Model name | SV model number | Battery type |
|---|---|---|
| Dyson V11 Absolute (early) | SV14 | Screw-in |
| Dyson V11 Animal (early) | SV14 | Screw-in |
| Dyson V11 Torque Drive (early) | SV14 | Screw-in |
How do you tell which V11 battery you have? Turn your vacuum upside down and look at the battery compartment. If you see a Torx screw holding the battery in place, you have the screw-in type. If there is a release button or latch, you have the click-in type.
Note that SV14 appears in both V11 tables. The SV number alone is not always enough for an early V11 — the physical attachment method is the deciding factor. Wholesale and bulk V11 packs are available through our BattAussie wholesale programme if you need screw-in stock specifically.
🔉 V12 Detect Slim: A Smaller Standalone Battery
Despite using the same click-in attachment style, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim uses a smaller battery pack that is not interchangeable with the V11 or the V15. The V12 was designed as a lightweight vacuum, and its battery is physically shorter and has a lower capacity than the V11/V15 battery.
Dyson V12 Detect Slim battery models and SV numbers
| Model name | SV model number | Battery type |
|---|---|---|
| Dyson V12 Detect Slim | SV20, SV34, SV44, SV46 | Click-in (smaller) |
Do not buy a V11 or V15 battery expecting it to fit a V12 — it will be physically too large. Always check the SV model number on your vacuum to confirm.
🔍 How to Identify Your Dyson Model and Battery Type
Before ordering a replacement battery, confirm your exact model. Here is how:
- Check the SV number. Look for a label on the main body of your vacuum (usually near the bin or on the underside). It will say something like “SV12” or “SV14”. This is the most reliable identifier.
- Check the serial number. Dyson’s website lets you enter your serial number to identify your exact model and production date.
- Look at the battery attachment method. Slide-in with screws (V6 family), snap-on (V7/V8), cylindrical in-handle (V10), click-in with a button release (V11 click-in / V15), or screw-in with a Torx screw (early V11).
If you are still unsure, our team can help. Send us your SV model number or a photo of your battery compartment — our technicians will identify the correct replacement for you before you buy. Use the contact form or email info@aussiebatt.com.

Ask our technicians❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Dyson V6 battery in a V7 or V8?
No. The V6, V7 and V8 each use different battery connector designs. Even though they all run at 21.6V, the physical shape and latch mechanism differ between each generation. You must use a battery specifically designed for your model.
A V6-family pack (SV03, SV04, SV05 or SV06) covers the V6, DC58, DC59, DC61, DC62, DC72 and DC74 only. If you want the full breakdown, jump back to the V6 family section.
Will a Dyson V10 battery fit a V11?
No. While both the V10 and the V11 use an in-line body design and 25.2V-class batteries, the battery packs are different sizes and have different connectors. The V10 uses a cylindrical pack that sits inside the handle; the V11 uses either a click-in pack or an early screw-in pack. A V10 battery will not physically fit in a V11.
My V11 battery has a screw. Is it compatible with V15 batteries?
No. Early V11 models use a screw-in battery that is unique to those production runs. Only the newer click-in style V11 battery is compatible with the V15.
You can identify your type by checking whether your battery is held in by a Torx screw or a click-release button — turn the vacuum upside down and look at the battery compartment. See the V11 section for the full model tables.
Can I upgrade to a higher-capacity battery for more runtime?
Yes — as long as the battery is designed for your specific model family. We supply extended-capacity cells for several Dyson generations that provide longer runtime while maintaining the same form factor and connector, so nothing needs to be modified and no adapter is required.
Ask us for the current capacity options for your model and we will confirm what is in stock.
How long do Dyson replacement batteries last?
A quality replacement battery typically lasts 2 to 3 years with regular use, similar to the original. Battery lifespan depends on usage frequency, charging habits and storage conditions. Avoid leaving your vacuum on the charger continuously for extended periods, as this can reduce long-term battery health.
Our Dyson battery care guide covers storage temperature, charging habits and the signs of a pack that is no longer worth keeping.
What do the SV model numbers mean?
SV stands for “Small Vacuum” and is Dyson’s internal model classification system. The number after SV identifies the specific vacuum design. For example, SV12 covers all V10 variants, while SV14 and SV15 cover different V11 versions.
Knowing your SV number is the most reliable way to find the correct replacement battery — the full list is in the compatibility chart.
Can I use a V15 Detect battery in a Dyson V12 Detect Slim?
No. The V12 Detect Slim uses a physically smaller battery pack with a lower capacity than the V11 and V15 pack. Do not buy a V11 or V15 battery expecting it to fit a V12 — it will be physically too large. Always check the SV model number on your vacuum to confirm.
Where do I find the SV number on my Dyson vacuum?
Look for a label on the main body of your vacuum, usually near the bin or on the underside. It will say something like “SV12” or “SV14”. If you still cannot confirm it, send us a photo of the battery compartment along with the SV number and our technicians will identify the correct replacement for you.
📋 Summary
Understanding which Dyson models use the same battery saves you time and money when shopping for replacements. The V6 family offers the widest cross-compatibility, the V7 and V8 each stand alone, the V10 has its own family, and the V11 splits into two sub-types with the click-in version extending into the V12 and V15.
Always check your SV model number before ordering, and if you need help, our team is here to assist.
- One V6 pack covers 7 models — the cheapest way to cover a household of older vacuums.
- One V10 pack covers all four V10 sub-models.
- The V11 click-in pack is the only battery that works across two generations (V11 and V15).
- Never force a pack: a mismatched battery can bend the contact pins and damage the handle electronics.
