{"id":1668,"date":"2016-04-23T04:32:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-23T04:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/?p=1668"},"modified":"2016-04-23T05:04:46","modified_gmt":"2016-04-23T05:04:46","slug":"lithium-ion-batteries-last-a-lifetime-lead-to-vastly-longer-lifespans-for-laptop-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/lithium-ion-batteries-last-a-lifetime-lead-to-vastly-longer-lifespans-for-laptop-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithium-ion batteries last a lifetime lead to vastly longer lifespans for laptop batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>University of California doctoral student Mya Le Thai holds a nanowire device that has the potential to enable hundreds of thousands of recharges in a lithium-ion battery.\u00a0This new discovery could lead to vastly longer lifespans for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/extended-life-laptop-batteries.html\">batteries in laptop computers<\/a>, tablet PCs, smartphones, appliances, cars and spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop Battery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.batteriescompany.com.au\/dell-inspiron-1525-laptop-battery.html\" rel=\"2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.batteriescompany.com.au\/images\/dell-inspiron-1525-laptop-battery.jpg\" alt=\"Dell Inspiron 1525 Battery\" width=\"639\" height=\"256\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>Researchers have pursued using nanowires in batteries for years because the filaments, thousands of times thinner than a human hair, are highly conductive and have a large surface area for the storage and transfer of electrons.<\/p>\n<p>The problem they have encountered, however, is that nanowires are also extremely fragile and don&#8217;t hold up well to repeated discharging and recharging, known as &#8220;cycling.&#8221; For example, in a typical lithium-ion battery, they expand and grow brittle, which leads to cracking.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"\" class=\"nativo-promo smartphone\"><\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/lenovo-laptop-battery\/thinkpad-t510.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1669\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/lithium-ion-laptop-batteries-last-a-lifetime.png\" alt=\"lithium-ion-laptop-batteries-last-a-lifetime\" width=\"620\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/lithium-ion-laptop-batteries-last-a-lifetime.png 620w, https:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/lithium-ion-laptop-batteries-last-a-lifetime-300x105.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>UCI doctoral candidate Mya Le Thai solved the brittleness conundrum by coating a gold nanowire in a manganese dioxide shell and encasing the assembly in an electrolyte made of a Plexiglas-like gel.
