{"id":1573,"date":"2015-09-13T01:05:42","date_gmt":"2015-09-13T01:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/?p=1573"},"modified":"2015-09-13T01:05:42","modified_gmt":"2015-09-13T01:05:42","slug":"new-solid-state-batteries-will-enable-almost-indefinite-battery-power-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/new-solid-state-batteries-will-enable-almost-indefinite-battery-power-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"New solid-state batteries will enable almost indefinite battery power storage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s common lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte &#8212; an organic solvent that has been responsible for overheating and fires in cars, commercial airliners and smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>MIT and Samsung say their solid-state batteries could last a lifetime.\u00a0Along with MIT, scientists from the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, the University of California at San Diego and the University of Maryland conducted the research.\u00a0Researchers have developed a new material for a basic battery component that they say will enable almost indefinite power storage.\u00a0The new material &#8212; a solid electrolyte &#8212; could not only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/7-ways-to-optimize-toshiba-pa3537u-1bas-laptop-battery-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">increase battery life<\/a>, but also storage capacity and safety, as liquid electrolytes are the leading cause of battery fires.<\/p>\n<h3>Solid-state electrolytes as an improvement over today&#8217;s lithium-ion batteries<\/h3>\n<p>With a solid electrolyte, there&#8217;s no safety problem.\u00a0&#8220;You could throw it against the wall, drive a nail through it \u2014 there&#8217;s nothing there to burn,&#8221; said Gerbrand Ceder, a professor of materials science and engineering at MIT and one of the main researchers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/asus\/a32-f3-batteries.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1574\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/asus-a32-f3-extended-life-battery.jpg\" alt=\"asus-a32-f3-extended-life-battery\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" \/><\/a>Additionally, with a solid-state electrolyte, there&#8217;s virtually no degradation, meaning such batteries could last through &#8220;hundreds of thousands of cycles,&#8221; Ceder added.\u00a0Organic electrolytes also have limited electrochemical stability, meaning they lose their ability to produce an electrical charge over time.<\/p>\n<p>Electrolytes are one of three main components in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aussiebatt.com\/acer\/aspire-one-a150-batteries.html\">Acer aspire one a150 battery<\/a>, the other two being the terminals &#8212; the anode and the cathode.\u00a0A battery&#8217;s electrolyte component separates the battery&#8217;s positive cathode and negative anode terminals, and it allows the flow of ions between terminals. A chemical reaction takes place between the two terminals producing an electric current.<\/p>\n<p>A past problem with solid electrolytes is that they could not conduct ions fast enough to be efficient energy producers.
